LITTLETON, Mass. — Mevion Medical Systems, a Massachusetts-based developer of proton therapy technology, announced that AdventHealth Cancer Institute in Orlando, Florida, has selected its MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System to expand treatment options for adults and children with cancer.

The system will be installed at AdventHealth’s new cancer treatment facility on its Orlando campus, which is scheduled to open in 2028. The installation will establish AdventHealth’s first proton therapy program, providing patients in Central Florida with access to advanced radiation treatment closer to home.

Proton therapy uses precisely targeted radiation to treat tumors while reducing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Unlike conventional radiation therapy, proton beams can be designed to deposit most of their energy at a specific depth, potentially limiting radiation exposure beyond the tumor.

This capability is particularly important in pediatric cancer treatment, where minimizing radiation exposure to developing organs and healthy tissue can help reduce the risk of long-term complications.

The MEVION S250-FIT system is designed for installation within a standard linear accelerator radiation therapy vault, allowing hospitals to incorporate proton therapy into existing radiation oncology environments without requiring the large facilities traditionally associated with proton treatment.

The platform combines Mevion’s HYPERSCAN pencil beam scanning technology with Leo Cancer Care’s Marie 360-degree upright patient positioning system, integrated CT imaging and RaySearch Laboratories’ RayStation treatment planning software.

These technologies are designed to support precise radiation delivery and treatment planning for a range of adult and pediatric cancers.

AdventHealth Cancer Institute provides cancer treatment, clinical research and supportive services addressing patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Its new Orlando facility will expand access to specialized cancer care, early-phase clinical trials and advanced surgical and treatment capabilities.

“Every day, we meet patients at one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, and it is our responsibility to bring together both clinical expertise and compassionate whole person care,” said Dr. Mark Socinski, executive medical director of the AdventHealth Cancer Institute.

“Bringing this advanced proton therapy platform to our cancer program will expand treatment options for adults and children while surrounding them with the specialists and support they need throughout their journey. By offering advanced proton therapy close to home, we help keep each patient’s care connected, coordinated and close to the people who matter most,” Socinski added.

The selection represents another deployment of Mevion’s latest-generation proton therapy platform, which is designed to make advanced radiation treatment more accessible to hospitals and regional cancer centers.

Tina Yu, PhD, president and CEO of Mevion Medical Systems, said the agreement reflects growing interest in compact proton therapy systems that can be integrated into comprehensive cancer care facilities.

“AdventHealth is making a significant investment in the future of cancer care, and its selection of the MEVION S250-FIT adds to the momentum behind our latest-generation platform,” Yu said.

“We engineered this system to change how health systems bring proton therapy to their patients. Its compact upright architecture brings precision proton delivery and integrated imaging into a platform designed for a standard radiation therapy vault,” she added.

Mevion said the technology is intended to help healthcare systems overcome some of the infrastructure challenges traditionally associated with proton therapy installations while expanding access to specialized radiation treatment.

The AdventHealth installation is expected to support the institute’s broader efforts to integrate advanced cancer treatments, clinical research and patient support services within a single facility.
