Jacksonville, Fla. — Johnson & Johnson said it is expanding U.S. availability of TECNIS PureSee IOL, an extended depth of focus intraocular lens designed for patients undergoing cataract surgery.
The company said the expanded rollout is paired with a new patient lifestyle quiz intended to help people make more informed decisions before cataract surgery.
TECNIS PureSee IOL is a presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens designed to support visual clarity and quality after cataract surgery. Johnson & Johnson said the lens offers excellent distance and intermediate vision with some near vision, a low level of bothersome visual symptoms and strong vision quality in both day and night settings.
“With the full U.S. availability of TECNIS PureSee IOL, we are expanding access to an important extended depth of focus option that reflects our commitment to innovation, visual quality, and patient satisfaction,” said Erin Powers, President, Surgical Vision, North America, Johnson & Johnson. “Patients today want vision solutions that support how they live their lives every day. TECNIS PureSee IOL builds on the trusted TECNIS platform to help meet those expectations while giving surgeons greater flexibility to personalize care.”
The expanded availability comes during Cataract Awareness Month. Johnson & Johnson said cataracts are one of the leading causes of vision impairment, with nearly 20% of Americans ages 40 and older living with cataracts that make everyday tasks more difficult. The company said only 5% have had cataract surgery.
Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safe procedures in the United States, with a success rate of nearly 98%, according to the company.
In a single procedure, TECNIS PureSee IOL addresses cataract-related vision loss and the effects of presbyopia, a condition in which the eyes gradually lose the ability to see nearby objects clearly. Nearly everyone develops presbyopia by age 50.
Johnson & Johnson said more than 500,000 eyes worldwide have experienced clearer, extended range of vision with TECNIS PureSee IOL after cataract surgery. The company also said 97% of patients would recommend the lens to friends or family.
TECNIS PureSee IOL is the first and only U.S. FDA-approved extended depth of focus IOL with no warning on loss of contrast sensitivity, according to Johnson & Johnson. Contrast sensitivity refers to a patient’s ability to distinguish an object from its background, which is important for visual quality, particularly in low-light or foggy conditions.
By maintaining contrast sensitivity comparable to an aspheric monofocal IOL, Johnson & Johnson said TECNIS PureSee IOL helps patients experience visual clarity while also benefiting from an extended range of vision.
“I was an investigator with the TECNIS PureSee IOL, so I have firsthand experience with this lens, and I’m excited to have this option in my practice for patients,” said Daniel Chang, MD, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon, Empire Eye & Laser Center. “This is the first presbyopia-correcting lens I’ve seen that has similar, if not in some cases even fewer, night vision symptoms than a monofocal lens. This is a very exciting time for the TECNIS platform. I think TECNIS PureSee IOL is going to be a landmark advancement.”
