SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Baystate Health is planning a significant expansion of the Emergency Department at Baystate Noble Hospital to increase capacity and meet growing demand in Westfield and surrounding communities.

The hospital’s Emergency Department currently handles more than 31,000 visits annually. Baystate said the expansion will create additional capacity while improving patient privacy, staff visibility and workflow efficiency.

“The improved layout is designed to enhance staff visibility, promote better teamwork, and increase workflow efficiency,” said Brandon Okezie, President and COO of Baystate Noble Hospital. “Ultimately, the new Emergency Department will provide future-ready capacity to serve both hospital and broader community needs as they continue to grow.”

The project is in the early design phase and will include flexible treatment areas intended to accommodate changing medical needs. Plans also call for designated spaces for behavioral health patients and patient isolation.

Baystate said the redesigned department will provide greater flexibility for treating patients with a range of medical and behavioral health needs.

A final construction timeline and total project cost have not yet been determined.

Baystate said the expansion is also expected to strengthen emergency care capacity across its broader regional network by increasing the number of patients who can be treated at Baystate Noble.
