WALTHAM, Mass. — Wolters Kluwer Health said approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals and health systems have adopted UpToDate Expert AI, as healthcare organizations expand their use of artificial intelligence for clinical decision support.
The figure represents more than 90 percent of U.S. customers using the UpToDate Enterprise Edition, according to the company. Wolters Kluwer also said more than 230 customer sites in 36 countries are participating in pilots of the technology.
Health systems using UpToDate Expert AI include Sharp HealthCare, Duke University Health System, University of Iowa Health Care and Intermountain Health.
The platform is designed to provide clinicians with AI-generated answers grounded in UpToDate’s clinical content while giving health systems governance tools and visibility into how the technology is used.
“Healthcare system leaders have told us they want clinical AI solutions with clear governance guardrails and seamless integration into the workflow,” said Yaw Fellin, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Clinical Decision Support and Provider Solutions at Wolters Kluwer Health.
The company also added drug-dosing guidance to the U.S. version of UpToDate Expert AI.
The feature is intended to answer medication-related questions using patient- and drug-specific considerations, supporting assumptions and clinical rationale. Clinicians can review those assumptions and access more detailed drug information when needed.
Wolters Kluwer said the dosing capability underwent review by clinicians and pharmacists and was tested using real-world medication questions.
“Accessing dosing information through UpToDate Expert AI is fast and reliable,” said Vernon Rayford, M.D., of North Mississippi Health Services. “I can also get just a quick answer to a clinical dosing question.”
The drug-dosing feature is currently available only in the United States.
UpToDate Enterprise Edition also provides health systems with clinical usage analytics, patient education tools, continuing medical education tracking and integrations with platforms such as Epic MyChart and other AI-enabled clinical technologies.
