Washington — Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital tied for the top position among 10 hospitals recognized in the Boston metropolitan area in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-2027 Best Hospitals rankings.
The annual rankings recognized 505 Best Regional Hospitals across 49 states and Washington, D.C., based on their performance in common procedures and medical conditions.
U.S. News also introduced regional specialty rankings for cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; orthopedics; and rehabilitation. The new rankings are intended to help patients compare hospitals offering complex care within their regions.
“For nearly four decades, U.S. News has helped families and their medical providers navigate complex healthcare decisions,” said Ben Harder, Chief of Health Analysis and Managing Editor at U.S. News.
“Because most patients choose providers close to home, this year’s debut of regional specialty rankings in Cancer; Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery; Orthopedics and Rehabilitation gives them an easy new way to evaluate their local options in consultation with their medical providers,” Harder said.
U.S. News said it increased the statistical weight assigned to risk-adjusted patient outcomes, including survival and complication rates, in determining the latest rankings.
The publication evaluated hospital performance using measures including risk-adjusted mortality, preventable complications and patient experience. Its specialty rankings and ratings for procedures and conditions draw on more than 800 million patient-care records.
The Boston area was among 28 metropolitan regions with at least five hospitals designated as Best Regional Hospitals.
Other top-ranked hospitals in major metropolitan areas included Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Mount Sinai Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell, and NYU Langone Hospitals tied for the top ranking in the New York metropolitan area.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Rush University Medical Center tied for the top position in Chicago, while Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center shared the top ranking in Los Angeles.
U.S. News also recognized 73 Best Regional Hospitals for Community Access. The designation highlights hospitals providing care to underserved and vulnerable populations in their communities.
Twenty hospitals across nine states were named to the national Honor Roll for demonstrating broad clinical excellence across multiple specialties.
The rankings are now in their 37th year. U.S. News said patients should consider hospital rankings alongside guidance from their physicians and medical care teams when making treatment decisions.
