Springfield, Mass. — Baystate Health has promoted Seth Gemme, M.D., to Chief Physician Executive of Baystate Health and President of Baystate Medical Practices, expanding his leadership responsibilities after nearly a decade with the health system.
In his new role, Dr. Gemme will advise Baystate Health and Health New England leadership and represent physicians in system-wide decision-making. He will also lead efforts focused on improving access to care, clinical operations, quality, safety and patient experience across Baystate’s five hospitals.
“Dr. Gemme brings a unique combination of clinical expertise, operational leadership, and a deep understanding of our organization and the communities we serve,” said Peter D. Banko, President and CEO of Baystate Health.
Banko said Dr. Gemme’s experience will help the system improve access to care, physician engagement and clinical operations while supporting Baystate’s broader healthcare transformation efforts.
Dr. Gemme joined Baystate’s Department of Emergency Medicine in 2017 and has held several leadership positions within the organization. Most recently, he served as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine for Baystate Health and UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate.
His previous roles include system Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for Emergency Medicine, Chief of the Emergency Department at Baystate Wing Hospital, and Associate Chief and Education Director of the Emergency Department at Baystate Noble Hospital.
As Chief Physician Executive, Dr. Gemme will oversee initiatives aimed at improving clinical throughput and access across Baystate’s hospitals while strengthening physician engagement, accountability and collaboration. He will also support the system’s academic mission and efforts to improve operational performance.

During his tenure at Baystate, Dr. Gemme helped develop the Vertical Model of Care at Baystate Medical Center, an approach designed to improve emergency department patient flow by matching care delivery with patient acuity and clinical needs. He also helped develop a real-time emergency department surge tool aimed at improving patient flow during periods of high demand.
Dr. Gemme earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Westfield State University and his Doctor of Medicine from the University at Buffalo. He completed his emergency medicine residency at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and is pursuing an MBA from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
