BOSTON — Elucid has announced the commercial availability of a new Lesion Inspection Tool within its Plaque-IQ software suite, aimed at improving how physicians evaluate coronary and carotid artery disease.

The new functionality enables clinicians to analyze plaque composition and burden at the level of individual lesions across blood vessels, offering more precise insight into patient risk and supporting more informed treatment decisions.

“The Lesion Inspection Tool provides a detailed view of plaque composition at the lesion level, beyond giving just overall plaque metrics,” said Jimmy Kerrigan, MD, an interventional cardiologist with Ascension Saint Thomas Heart. “Because cardiovascular events like heart attacks occur at the lesion level, having the ability to characterize individual lesions enhances my understanding of a patient’s disease process and supports more informed clinical decision-making.”

The tool allows physicians to examine specific regions within arteries and access quantitative data tied to those segments. By measuring plaque types at the lesion level, it helps identify high-risk features such as lipid-rich necrotic core, a known contributor to cardiovascular events. The company said this level of detail enables more proactive and personalized treatment strategies.

Plaque-IQ uses CT-Virtual Histology technology to noninvasively classify and quantify plaque in coronary and carotid arteries. According to Elucid, the platform is trained and validated against histology, the gold standard for plaque characterization, allowing it to directly measure disease features rather than relying on indirect indicators.

The company said its approach focuses on underlying disease biology instead of population-based risk estimates, with the goal of helping physicians better prioritize care and tailor treatment plans for individual patients.
