Boston — athenahealth has introduced new artificial intelligence capabilities in its athenaOne platform designed to help healthcare organizations manage value-based care programs and identify clinical and operational opportunities across patient populations.

The company said the new tools combine AI with data from athenahealth’s connected network and embed information directly into existing clinical and administrative workflows.

“athenahealth is uniquely positioned to help organizations succeed in value-based care because of the scale of our network and the flexibility of our platform,” said Chad Dodd, Vice President of Product Management at athenahealth. “AI is only as powerful as the data that fuels it, and our network provides access to one of healthcare’s richest data sets. Combined with an architecture designed to deploy AI rapidly and at scale, this enables us to help organizations adapt and thrive as the industry shifts toward value-based care.”

Among the new capabilities is Clinically Inferred Diagnosis Gaps, now in beta, which uses AI to analyze patient chart data and identify undocumented diagnoses that may warrant review. The system presents potential diagnoses with supporting clinical evidence to help providers with care planning and documentation.

athenahealth said clinically inferred diagnosis gaps generated by the system have a two-times higher closure rate and a 3.5-times lower dismissal rate than suspected diagnosis gaps identified from other sources.

The company is also testing Enterprise Care Management tools that use AI to suggest personalized care plan goals and generate summaries of hospital care events. The features are intended to help care teams coordinate follow-up and improve continuity of care.

Another beta feature, Data Explorer, provides population-level reporting to help clinical and administrative teams monitor quality measures, identify care gaps and stratify patient populations. Embedded AI can explain why individual patients have or have not met specific quality measures.

athenahealth is also testing Sage for Analytics, which allows value-based care teams to analyze population data using natural language, create visualizations and identify quality improvement opportunities.

A separate Agentic Care Gap Outreach capability is expected to enter alpha testing. The tool is designed to identify patients who may need outreach and prepare tailored communications for customer review and approval before they are sent.

The new capabilities are intended to support risk adjustment, quality performance, shared-savings opportunities and efforts to reduce unnecessary healthcare costs.
