Boston — The American Lung Association is urging New England residents to prepare for respiratory virus season, which typically begins in October, with particular attention to older adults and people with chronic health conditions.

The organization said Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut have a higher proportion of older residents than the national average, with about one in five people in the region over age 65.

Older adults face an increased risk of serious complications, hospitalization and death from respiratory illnesses including influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.

People with chronic lung or heart disease, diabetes, weakened immune systems and other long-term medical conditions can also face greater risks from respiratory infections, including pneumonia and worsening of existing health problems.

“Older adults in New England face a higher risk from respiratory illnesses. Thankfully, vaccines are available to help prevent serious complications and protect the health of families across the region,” said David Hill, M.D., immediate past Chair of the American Lung Association’s Board of Directors. “We are encouraging everyone to receive recommended vaccines ideally in September or October, so that immunity can develop before these viruses start spreading widely in the community. Talk to your healthcare provider to ensure you and your loved ones are up to date.”

The American Lung Association said many health insurance plans cover recommended vaccines without out-of-pocket costs, though individuals should check with their insurer for specific coverage information.

Vaccines may be available through healthcare providers, local pharmacies and public health departments.
