MANHASSET, N.Y. — Tobias Janowitz, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed director of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research’s Institute of Cancer Research, Northwell Health said.
Janowitz will also serve as the Robert and Janet Perro Professor in Cancer Research and director of Translational Cancer Research at Northwell Health’s Cancer Institute. He will continue leading his research program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Cancer Center while helping oversee the strategic affiliation between Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Northwell.
“I look forward to the great honor and responsibility of overseeing cancer research at Northwell and the Feinstein Institutes and bringing two scientific leaders — Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Feinstein Institutes — more closely together,” Janowitz said.
“These scientists, along with collaborators worldwide, will advance cancer diagnostic and treatment options to help the millions of people living with cancer,” he added.
Janowitz has more than 20 years of experience studying the mechanisms that drive cancer progression. His research focuses on metabolic, neuroendocrine and immune pathways that influence disease progression and response to treatment.
His work has also examined cancer cachexia, a severe wasting syndrome that can affect cancer patients, including how tumors alter energy metabolism, increase stress hormones and weaken the immune system.
“Dr. Janowitz’s contributions to cancer research are widely recognized,” said Kevin J. Tracey, M.D., President and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes and the Karches Family Distinguished Chair in Medical Research.
“His leadership will attract additional scientific expertise to join us in transforming the future research and treatment of cancer,” Tracey added.
Janowitz earned both his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. He is trained as both a clinician and laboratory scientist and continues to care for patients while leading his research program.
Northwell has continued to expand its cancer research and clinical trial efforts. In 2025, the health system opened the Northwell-START New York-Long Island facility, an early-phase cancer clinical trial center at its R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center.
Jeff Boyd, Ph.D., will continue as a professor in the Institute of Cancer Research and as Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer and Director of the Center for Genomic Medicine at Northwell’s Cancer Institute.
