BURLINGTON, Mass. — Azenta, Inc. announced that board member Martin Madaus, D.V.M., Ph.D., has been appointed Interim President and CEO following the resignation of John Marotta as an executive officer and director.
Dr. Madaus joined Azenta’s Board of Directors in 2024 and has more than 30 years of leadership experience in diagnostics and life science tools.
He currently serves as a Senior Operating Executive at The Carlyle Group and has previously held senior leadership positions at Millipore Corporation, Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics and Roche Diagnostics North America.
“Azenta’s focus remains on executing our long-range strategic plan to drive profitable, sustainable value creation,” said Frank E. Casal, Chairman of the Azenta Board. “The Board regularly analyzes the performance of our core business units and will continue to evaluate which areas merit targeted reinvestments, while also maintaining a disciplined approach to capital deployment.”
Casal said the board believes Madaus’ industry experience and familiarity with Azenta’s businesses will help ensure continuity during the leadership transition.
Azenta has retained Heidrick & Struggles to conduct a search for a permanent CEO.
The company also reaffirmed its previously issued fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 total revenue guidance. Azenta said adjusted EBITDA will be affected by a one-time consulting expense of about $3 million in the quarter. Excluding that charge, the company said it would also be reaffirming its adjusted EBITDA guidance.
“I am pleased to be taking on this role and look forward to leading Azenta as we continue to focus on disciplined execution and advancing key initiatives in support of our strategic plan,” Madaus said. “I have long admired Azenta as a leader in the space and believe that, with the support of the Company’s incredibly talented team, we can accelerate our efforts to meet our commitments and deliver value for shareholders.”
Madaus previously served as Chairman and CEO of Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Chairman, President and CEO of Millipore Corporation and President and CEO of Roche Diagnostics North America.
He also serves as Chair of the Board of Repligen Corporation and as a director at Haemonetics Corporation.
Madaus earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Munich and a Ph.D. in Veterinary Medicine from the Veterinary University of Hannover.
