NEEDHAM, Mass. — Evolved By Nature said its programmable peptide platform is being used in New Day Skin Spray, an FDA 510(k)-cleared prescription medical device for the management of atopic dermatitis developed and commercialized by Evolved Health.
The clearance marks the first time a therapy based on a peptide from Evolved By Nature’s platform has completed the regulatory process required to reach patients in a regulated medical field.
New Day Skin Spray is a topical emulsion designed to reinforce the skin barrier in people with atopic dermatitis. The product uses a soluble silk fibroin peptide that self-assembles into a flexible, breathable surface structure after application.
According to the company, the barrier is intended to limit the penetration of irritants and pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, which can contribute to the severity of atopic dermatitis. The non-steroidal therapy has no systemic exposure.
“What you’re seeing in New Day Skin Spray is our core technology doing exactly what we built it to do: supply a foundation that another company can carry forward into real clinical utility,” said Greg Altman, Ph.D., Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Evolved By Nature.
Altman said the company spent more than a decade developing a platform capable of producing peptides at scale and is now using artificial intelligence to accelerate the identification and development of molecules in its library for medical and biologic applications.
Evolved By Nature develops and manufactures the peptide platform, while Evolved Health developed New Day Skin Spray and is commercializing the product in partnership with specialty pharmacy PHILRx.
The prescription product is being introduced in select markets, with broader availability planned.
